Welcome to Kirkwood | Webster Groves

Former and present railroad town known for its history and eclectic charm, and the home of Webster University

The first planned suburb west of the Mississippi River, Kirkwood is a charming and eclectic railroad town turned trendy destination. Centrally located between the two main highways into downtown St. Louis, it’s home to incredible shops, restaurants, and museums. Named after James P. Kirkwood—builder of the Pacific Railroad through the city—Kirkwood is still influenced by its railroad system. Downtown Kirkwood has been a wonderful destination for residents since trains first began boarding passengers in 1853.

Today's Webster Groves was an area known to Indians and fur trappers as Dry Ridge until around 1845. Today it is dotted with eclectic, global restaurants, from pan-Asian to all-American, while Lockwood Avenue is a hub for hip boutiques and home decor shops. Close to Webster University, the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis stages Shakespeare and modern drama. Amid the area’s tree-lined streets and historic homes is the Hawken House Museum, a mid-19th-century mansion with antique furnishings.

Home to many styles, both Kirkwood and Webster Groves homes have historic bones. Victorian, Tudor, and Italianate villa-style structures—dated back to 1860—line the streets with their wrap-around porches, screened verandas, and more. Homes range from $300,000 to several million-plus, and the area also boasts one of Frank Lloyd Wrights’s architectural gems.
