Welcome to St. Louis City

A Sports lover’s city composed of a surprising mix of art and entertainment

Known to St. Louisans as “The Lou,” St. Louis City is the perfect blend of urban trends and rich history. Home of the Gateway Arch, the world-renowned Missouri Botanical Garden, The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, the eclectic and quirky City Museum, and the St. Louis Zoo. And no mention of St. Louis is complete without talk of the Cardinals and Blues!

Established by Pierre Laclede Liguest as a fur trading post—due to its proximity to both the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers—St. Louis was named after Louis IX of France and continues to be known as our country’s “Gateway to the West.” St. Louis grew from the great Mississippi west, starting with its oldest community, Soulard, known for its brick streets and historic townhomes. As founders moved west in 1852, Lafayette Square was established, home to some of the Mississippi River’s most storied steamboat captains. Today the Square is still known for its French architecture and vibrantly painted manses, affectionately known as “painted ladies.”

Other neighborhoods to explore include Tower Grove and Compton Heights, both homes to historic water towers, and parks. Check out Dutchtown, and don’t miss The Hill!

From Lafayette Square’s incredible Victorian-style architecture to Washington Avenue’s historic urban buildings and textile factories turned residential lofts, St. Louis City has something for every urban lifestyle.
